Which Auto Parts to Use for Repairs

February 9th, 2009

There are many options to choose from when it comes to a car that doesn’t work anymore: it can be junked, a new car can be purchased, the car can be fixed, a rental car can be used for the time being, or a family member’s can can also be used for the time being. There are a plethora of ideas that can be chosen from if one has a failing car, though, the best thing to do would just repair the car that doesn’t work any longer. This may also be harder than it looks, though, because of the fact that auto parts are expensive nowadays, labor is expensive when getting repairs done at an auto repair shop, and there are many choices to make as to what kind of repairs need to be made anyway.

One issue that many people deal with when fixing their car by themselves or having an auto repair shop fix their car is what type of auto parts they’ll be using. There are basically two types of auto parts that can be used to fix a car, and they both will be explained, as well as the pros and cons of using each type of auto part.

The first type of auto part that comes to mind when repairing one’s car is OEM auto parts. The term “OEM” stands for “original equipment manufacturer,” and this means that OEM auto parts come directly from the company that made the car in the first place. In other words, if a person’s Chevrolet Cavalier were to fail because of the alternator or starter then an OEM alternator or starter could be purchased in order to repair the car. The benefit of buying original equipment manufacturer auto parts is the fact that there will generally be a warranty on the part that is bought. In addition, one is usually guaranteed that the part will work and fit the car on the first try.

A downside to ordering OEM auto parts is the fact that they are generally much more expensive that other types of auto parts. Whereas other auto parts may be around $50, the same auto parts that are bought from the OEM may be as much as $150. The price makes all the difference, too, when repairing your car, so it may not necessarily behoove you to purchase OEM auto parts.

On the other hand, the other type of auto parts that can be purchased when repairing a car is after-market auto parts, or auto parts that are made for the same automobile by third-parties. These automobile parts are generally much easier to run into, and more auto repair shops and retail stores generally carry after-market auto parts as opposed to OEM auto parts. That is one of the big advantages to buying those types of auto parts, but another is that they are much less expensive than OEM auto parts. This was touched on in the last paragraph about OEM parts, but after-market automobile parts are generally 50% or more less than the original manufacturer’s auto parts.

All things considered, it is really up to the person and the situation when the car is being repaired. Many people choose OEM auto parts just because they are the safest type of parts to go with, but arguments for third-party auto parts are because they are much cheaper are more accessible. All in all, though, there are all sorts of options and decisions to make when looking for auto parts to fix your car!

How To Avoid Automotive Air Conditioning Repair Scams

February 1st, 2009

Within the automotive industry there are always automotive air conditioning repair rip-offs that occur all of the time. You need to be prepared to avoid  automotive air conditioning repair scams that can result in you paying more for automotive air conditioning repairs. Here are some some simple steps you can take to avoid automotive air conditioning repair scams.

First of all you when you do  automotive air conditioning repairs, take it to your dealer if it is still under warranty. If the warranty does not cover the automotive air conditioning repairs, then try to go to places such as chain store shops who have trusted mechanics or get a good referral from a  friend. You want to work with people who you can trust to do all of your automotive air conditioning repairs.

Avoiding unnecessary repairs is another good way to avoid  automotive air conditioning repair scams. Ask to see the parts if you are told that you need things replaced. In some states it is the law that the mechanics supply you with the old parts. This will help keep the mechanic form listing unnecessary repairs.

Making sure the mechanics certification is up to date is another way to avoid automotive air conditioning repair rip-offs. There are eight points of certification to be ASE certified, but repair shops do not always hire mechanics certified in all eight points. This can lead to problems when it comes to your automotive air conditioning repairs. By checking a mechanics certification you can avoid faulty  automotive air conditioning repairs and inform the repair shop that their mechanics are not fully certified.

Getting a second opinion never hurts when you are getting automotive air conditioning repairs. Always check with other mechanics and tell them of the first mechanics opinion. Usually if you were given false information about your automotive air conditioning repairs, a second opinion could expose this false information.

These are some simple precautions that can help you avoid  automotive air conditioning repair scams that occur continuously.

Auto Repair Advice

January 25th, 2009

You have to be careful where you take your car in for auto repair. There are a great many people out there who will tell you the truth and will not over charge you, but there are some who might take advantage of you if they think that you know nothing about cars. Sometimes people might suggest work that does not need to be done to make some extra money, or they might charge you double what someone else might charge, hoping that you don’t know the difference.

Sometimes you have no choice to pay what someone is trying to charge you for auto repair, and that may happen if you are out of town and breakdown or have an accident. You really don’t have the time or resources to shop around or get a second opinion on what is wrong and how much it should cost. Other than that, however, you have to be careful about who you see for your auto repair needs. If you already have a mechanic you know you can trust, you don’t have to worry, but most people aren’t sure what they are doing or who they should see.

When you move to a new area and don’t know who to go to for auto repair, you shouldn’t wait around for something to happen. You should find out who your neighbors trust, and also ask family if you have any in the area. Auto repair shops are all over the place, and you might want to find something that is close by. If you have an inspection coming up, take your car into someone who has been recommended to you and see if you like what you see when you are there.

If you have major repairs, always get an estimate from at least three different places if you don’t already have an auto repair shop that you trust. If you find that one of the prices seems to be highly inflated, you know that you should go there. When you finally choose someone, make sure they know that you only expect them to fix what is wrong, and that if they find something else, they should never fix it until they have called and ask you about it first. This is an old trick in auto repair that you have to watch out for. There may honestly be something else that needs to be fixed, but they should never do it without your consent.

Auto Parts for Necessary Repairs

January 19th, 2009

Repairing your automobile can always cause certain headaches that are just not needed. Even though there are professional car repair shops that will help you repair your car, they will also charge a pretty penny for the work that they do. In fact, most of the time the price that people pay for car repairs in professional shops does not come from the auto parts themselves, but is the labor charges that have to be paid. One great alternative to professional car services that repair your automobile is to do it yourself. There are thousands of individuals who dislike taking their car to auto shops, which is the main reason that they do most of their repairs themselves. On the other hand, if you don’t mind getting a little dirty there are always simple options of repairing your car yourself. Here are some of the more common jobs that need to be done from time to time and the auto parts that you’ll need for them.

Changing Your Brakes

This is a project that usually has to be done at least every other year. Of course, it depends totally on the type of car you have as well as how old the car is that you’re driving. But brakes get worn down just as any of the other auto parts do, and they need changing from time to time. Before you start out on the journey to change your brakes, the first thing that you’ll need is the equipment. But how much do you need to change? Many people simply think that they’ll need only the brake pads; however, it’s important to consider how long one has been driving with their brakes worn down in the first place.

For a total brake change, the auto parts that one is going to need are the brake pads, discs, and calipers. Depending on whether or not the rotors are worn down also, you may need those. Also, most cars come with a set of brake shoe sets that you will need to replace as well as everything else on the list of auto parts that you’ll need.

Changing Oil and Fuel Filters

This is a whole other different job in itself and requires a different set of auto parts. Many professional auto repair shops will charge about $30 to perform an oil and oil filter change, and a fuel filter change costs about $50. However, one can do these jobs easily and simply by themselves with only paying for the auto parts. In order to change the oil filter the only thing that needs to be done is to buy the oil filter itself, which usually only costs around $5.00, and change it while you’re underneath the car changing your oil. On the other hand, the fuel filter is a little bit more expensive and the process is quite different because it actually usually involves taking off one of the wheels, but one only needs to pay for the auto parts that he or she will need, which is simply the fuel filter itself.

There are plenty of other simple repair procedures that can be done all by yourself. It’s definitely not necessary to quickly run to an auto shop every time that every little thing needs to be done. By doing the work by yourself you not only save the cost of labor, but you also only need to pay for the auto parts that you use!

Auto Repair

January 11th, 2009

Few people realize what you can do with an automotive repair manual, a little bit of free time, some basic automotive tools, and a bit of cash to throw around. A lot of people take it for granted that you have to have all of your auto repair done by professionals, but this is not the case. It depends a lot on the model of the car and type of problem, but most auto repair is actually pretty simple to do. Sometimes, you can save hundreds of dollars on fixing your car by taking a simple shortcut. For example, I used to own up an old and clunky Voyager with a rusted out rear air-conditioning unit. All the coolant leak out of it, and they said it would cost hundreds of dollars to fix. Instead, I use a clamp from a normal hardware store to cut off the rear air-conditioning unit. It cost me less than a dollar, took me no more than an hour to do, and completely solved the problem!

Nevertheless, for more serious problems, auto repair is definitely a must. I know some people who do automotive engine repair on their own, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you really know what you are doing. Today’s cars are more sophisticated and complex than ever, and it takes a quality automotive technician to really diagnose and fix the problem. Don’t get me wrong - if you have someone there to help you who knows what they are doing, you can probably get enough help to work your way through. Nonetheless, if you are even the slightest bit unsure of your abilities, you should probably leave the auto repairs to the expert.

One of the best compromises is to let your mechanic diagnose the problem, then go and repair it yourself. One of the biggest dangers with trying to perform your own auto repair is not knowing what the problem is. Amateur mechanics can jump to conclusions and miss out on the whole issue at hand. This can cause all kinds of problems, and will usually lose you more money than you can gain by not hiring a mechanic. If you have your mechanic figure out what is wrong, however, you can still save a lot of money on labor costs by doing the job yourself. It doesn’t make sense for everyone, but for some people it really does.
